Theory overview

Notes on the guitar are made up of two elements. That is the string that the note is played on and the fret the note is played at.

Guitar tab shows you exactly where a note is played using these two pieces of information.

Guitar tab is made up of 6 horizontal lines. These lines represent the 6 strings of the guitar.

A note in tab is shown by a number. The number represents the fret the note is played at and the line represents the string that the note is played on. Below is an example of 2 notes in tab played one after another.

A single note in tab

How to play this:

As you can see there is a number 4 on the 3rd line down. This indicates a note played on the 3rd string at the 4th fret.

Chords in tab

When more than one number is aligned vertically then the notes are played together as a chord.

How to play this:

Looking at the tab above you can see that there is a number on each line. This indicates that each string is going to be played. So from 6th string to first string we can see the numbers:

3 = 3rd fret

2 = 2nd fret

0 = 0th fret (string played open)

0 = 0th fret (string played open)

0 = 0th fret (string played open)

3 = 3rd fret
