Theory overview
This form of tuning is very
similar to the standard E tuning. The only difference is the 6th string
(thickest string) is dropped one full step. This means that the 6th string
is tuned to a low D note rather than the E note formed in standard
guitar tuning.
Drop D tuning is used by
many rock bands such as System of a down, Tool, Nirvana and much more. The
main reason why it's so popular in rock and metal music is that it allows
the guitarist to play a power chord with just a single finger.
With this form of guitar
tuning you can create a power chord simply by holding down the top 3 strings
at any fret with a single finger.
